Medical research suggests that the widely prescribed class of antidepressants known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) have been associated with birth defects. Specifically, drugs like Lexapro, Paxil, Zoloft, and Celexa have been known to cause cardiac, pulmonary, and developmental complications among newborns whose mother ingested SSRIs during pregnancy.
The risk of prenatal exposure and the resulting complications are not evenly distributed during pregnancy. During the third trimester and, in particular, the first trimester, the possibility of significant, harmful fetal exposure is greatest. Of course, these are also periods in which expecting mothers may be least sensitive to these risks.
With this in mind, it is particularly important for SSRI manufacturers to adequately warn health care professionals and patients about the possibility of injury. Tragically, however, many patients did not receive sufficient information to understand the limitations of their antidepressant medication or the potential harm their child might experience.
Did you take an SSRI during your pregnancy? Has your child suffered from SSRI-related health conditions?
