If you have undergone surgery for an inferior vena cava (IVC) filter, you’re probably familiar with the FDA’s warning associated with this potentially dangerous medical product. Although IVC filters are designed to stop blood clots before they cause a stroke or other condition, they have also been correlated with a series of related problems, such as hemorrhage, deep vein thrombosis, and cardiac or pulmonary perforation.
The single most reported problem related to IVCs is device migration. For some patients, the IVC filter detaches from the vein where it was inserted and travels within the blood stream to another part of the body. In general, unplanned and unanticipated device destruction is a problem for many patients, such as filter fracture and migration.
