Drug LitigationMedical Study Reveals Zoloft Doubles Heart Defect Risk

March 2, 2012

A recent medical study of nearly 10,000 infants born with birth defects revealed that mothers who took Zoloft (sertraline) during the first trimester of pregnancy doubled the probability that their child was born with heart defects. Medical evidence such as this finding is what has prompted the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists to advise against the use of certain selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) during pregnancy, suggesting instead non-SSRIs like Wellbutrin (bupropion).
