In statistical research, it’s important to have a good data set. The idea is that the more information available to analyze, the better the analysis will be. For the researchers at Boston University who investigated the connection between selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) such as Zoloft (sertraline) and certain birth defects, the data set couldn’t be much more conclusive.
In a study of more than 15,000 infants, these researchers found that a pregnant mother’s use of sertraline during the first trimester of pregnancy measurably increased the probability of several kinds of birth defects, including anal atresia, limb reduction, and septal defects. While the absolute risk may be small, the increase is noticeable.
