According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, more than 115 people die daily in the U.S. by overdosing on opioids. From 2000 to 2017, opioids claimed the lives of more than half a million people.
Drug manufacturers, distributors, and sellers have contributed to the epidemic and made it worse. Drugmakers promoted prescribing the same drugs for long-term chronic pain rather than for short periods. Drug companies and distributors spent millions on promotional activities and materials that minimize the risks of opioids while overstating the benefits of their use. They've also provided millions of dollars in funding to prominent doctors, medical societies, and patient advocacy groups to win their support.
