You’ve waited patiently for several months and the big day has finally arrived – you are going to your naturalization eligibility interview. Here’s what you can expect and what you can do to be best prepared:
Questions about your application and background – be very familiar with the contents of your application.
- Update the interviewer of any changes in your application such as additional travel or a change in employment.
- Arrive on time and bring all necessary identification and supporting documentation – carefully review the checklist that USCIS sends you with your interview appointment notice.
- Prepare for the English language and civics tests – you will be tested by the immigration officer on your ability to read, write, speak, and understand English (unless you have filed for an exemption) and will also be tested on your knowledge and understanding of U.S. history and government.
- English language test: You must read aloud one out of three sentences correctly, write one out of three sentences correctly, and the immigration officer will determine your ability to speak English correctly. If you’re concerned about your ability to pass this section for a test and don’t qualify for an exemption, look for English-language classes geared toward the naturalization process in your community.
- You will be asked up to ten questions from the list of 100 questions that USCIS makes publicly available. This is an oral test and you must answer 6 out of the 10 questions correctly to pass.
- Be prepared for questions about your employment history or marital relationship if you qualify for naturalization based on an employer petition or marriage to a U.S. citizen.
