Are There Long-Term Complications to PPHN?

Prozac (fluoxetine) is a dangerous drug for pregnant women because it can harm the fetus growing in her womb. The reason that doctors commonly advise pregnant women not to smoke cigarettes or drink alcohol during pregnancy is the same reason that the FDA cautions against the unnecessary of use of antidepressants like Prozac during pregnancy: what the mother ingests, the baby ingests. And babies simply do not need the active ingredients in selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs).

Tragically, in utero exposure to Prozac has been linked to several painful birth defects, including persistent pulmonary hypertension (PPHN). A lung condition, PPHN can have both short-term and long-term effects, including feeding problems and hearing loss. Although long-term effects are rarer and in decline, they still impact many infants and their families.
