Critical Concerns over IVC Filter Dangers and Complications

recent study from The Journal of the American Medical Association revealed that the benefits of the IVC filter procedure are not always clear, when examined alongside the risks. The study stated that, “Although retrievable inferior vena cava filters are frequently used in addition to anticoagulation in patients with acute venous thromboembolism, their benefit-risk ratio is unclear… Primary efficacy outcome was symptomatic recurrent pulmonary embolism at 3 months. Secondary outcomes were recurrent pulmonary embolism at 6 months, symptomatic deep vein thrombosis, major bleeding, death at 3 and 6 months, and filter complications.” Patients have reported complications, such as blood clots, chest pains, pain in the filter area, and ultimately, death from pulmonary embolism. In some cases, the IVC filter migrates inside the body, and cannot be removed. The tragic consequences of this possibly unnecessary and dangerous medical device are increasing, while at the same time, one of the leading manufacturers of the IVC filter are experiencing massive growth in financial profits.
