Fears Nachawati: Leading the Fight Against Opioids

The opioid epidemic in America is killing more than a hundred people a day. Nearly $80B is being spent every year in health care costs, treatment programs, and additional costs to states, cities and counties. For decades, drug manufacturers, distributors, wholesalers and retailers – created the pill spill crisis and to this day continue to profit from it – having largely avoided taking any responsibility for what they’ve done. Things are starting to change.

Jonathan Novak is a former litigator for the Drug Enforcement Administration. As part of the DEA, he helped hold drug companies accountable whenever they failed to comply with federal rules and regulations. Since then, he’s played a crucial role in exposing the ways in which drug distributors, working together with a small group of lawmakers, stripped the DEA of its ability to effectively run pharmaceutical investigations. With federal oversight weakened and ineffective, they’ve had free reign to distribute pills across the nation seemingly without any concern to the consequences of what they were doing.

According to Fears Nachawati partner, Matthew McCarley, “Jonathan is an integral part of the case coordinating and representing states, cities and counties across America. Novak understands the drug industry, and the tactics that have been used to shirk responsibility for allowing the opioid crisis to transform into an epidemic affecting nearly every state, county and city in the United States.”

All across the country, state and county officials are having to deal with the effects the opioid crisis has had on their communities. Budgets that are too small. Resources being stretched to the breaking point. Firm founder, Majed Nachawati, and the firm’s opioid response team currently represent hundreds of communities in state courts and multidistrict litigation aimed at making drug manufacturers, distributors, wholesalers and retailers begin work to repair the damage they’ve caused. According to Mr. Nachawati, “The pill spill has had devastating effects everywhere we’ve looked. Our goal is to keep reaching out, and to recruit as many as we can to the fight. We still have a lot of work ahead of us, but the more who join, the stronger we’ll be.”
