The prevalence of autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) are on the rise in the United States, prompting medical researchers to publish in the Archives of General Psychiatry a review of whether prescription antidepressants such as Prozac (fluoxetine) may be a contributing factor to the incidence of ASDs.
What did they find? In a study that included roughly 300 children afflicted with an ASD and more than 1,500 control children, the researchers found a 200 percent increased risk of ASD in children whose took prescription antidepressants, also known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI), during pregnancy. Moreover, research showed the strongest relationship between SSRIs and ASDs during the first trimester.
