Before the country grasped the full extent of the opioid crisis, it was already claiming thousand of lives, costing millions of dollars, and millions more in resources. Now, another sobering statistic has been released, this time from the National Safety Council. For the first time in history, Americans are more likely to die by opioid overdoses than they are in a vehicle crash.
According to the report, the chances of dying in a motor vehicle crash are 1 in 103, while the probability of dying from an opioid overdose is 1 in 96. This comes from 2017 data on accidental deaths. More information on the NSC’s report can be found here.
