The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has rated Lexapro (escitalopram) a Pregnancy Category C drug because of the risk the drug may impose on the developing fetus, particularly during the later stages of pregnancy. Although human experience is limited and absolute risks are believed to be small, as a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) Lexapro shares many of the common risk attributes of other antidepressants. Specifically, medical research suggests that Lexapro may contribute to birth abnormalities and defects, such as low birth weight, respiratory distress, and even a serious condition known as persistent pulmonary hypertension (PPHN).
