According to a study in the Archives of General Psychiatry, a woman’s use of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) during the year preceding the delivery of a baby doubled the probability that the child would be born with autism spectrum disorder. Moreover, researchers noted that autism risk was even higher – a total of four times normal rates – when exposure occurred during the first trimester.
Gradually, doctors and patients are coming to terms with the full range of risks associated with SSRIs, a class of commonly prescribed antidepressants that includes Prozac (fluoxetine). What’s particular unique about these recent findings is that the period of risk extends before conception.
