NuvaRing, the Risk of Blood Clots, and You

Earlier this year, a British Medical Journal published a study in which health researchers reported a significant correlation between the use of a NuvaRing, a widely prescribed female contraceptive product, and an elevated risk of blood clots. Their investigation determined that NuvaRing and similarly designed vaginal rings raised the risk that a patient would develop blood clots by as much as 90 percent.

While this figure is higher than a previous Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announcement of a 56 percent higher blood clot rate, the trend is consistent: the risks associated with NuvaRing are meaningful. Attesting to this fact, more than a thousand women have reported a vaginal ring adverse health event with the FDA and a similar number have filed a lawsuit against the manufacturer of this health product.
